The State Government will seek new powers to suspend or dismiss Mayors and Councillors who are facing serious integrity charges when State Parliament resumes next week.<\/p>\n

Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the government would also ask Parliament to vote for a new power to suspend or dismiss a Council, Mayor or Councillor when it\u2019s in the public interest.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe reputation of Local Government has taken a hit in Queensland, with current and former Mayors and Councillors in some of our biggest councils facing dozens of criminal charges,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cSuspicion and distrust have impacted the entire sector, leading to a loss of public confidence – and therefore trust – in Local Government.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe changes to the Local Government Act in we\u2019re seeking include:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n
  • An automatic suspension for any Mayor or Councillor charged with one of a series of serious integrity offences; and<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
      \n
    • An expansion of the powers of the Local Government Minister to dismiss or suspend a Council, a Councillor or Mayor in the public interest.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      \u201cThe latter change is necessary to put beyond doubt the capacity of the government to intervene when necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n

      Mr Hinchliffe said the two new provisions would be introduced as amendments to the Belcarra Bill currently before State Parliament.<\/p>\n

      The government\u2019s Councillor Complaints Bill \u2013 which has been re-introduced after lapsing when the 2017 State Election was called \u2013 is also expected to be debated.<\/p>\n

      \u201cTransparency and accountability are the foundation stones on which we build governments \u2013 be they State or Local \u2013 that people can trust,” Mr Hinchliffe said.<\/p>\n
