Construction company Wiley has been appointed to design and build the new $60 million slaughter room at Swickers Kingaroy Bacon Factory.<\/p>\n

A symbolic ground-breaking ceremony to mark the start of the project was held on site in January but work is now expected to ramp up, with an expected completion date in early 2019.<\/p>\n

A Wiley spokesperson said the expansion would allow the Queensland pig industry to grow in line with the increased processing capacity.<\/p>\n

The company has been engaged for both the design and delivery of the project.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am looking forward to delivering this project for Swickers with local suppliers in the South Burnett region,” Wiley Senior Project Manager Greg Lynn said.<\/b><\/p>\n

“This project has been a vision of the company for some time and I am excited to be helping them to realise it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wiley managing director Tom Wiley said the company was proud to be designing and delivering the project for Swickers.<\/p>\n

“This will enable them to respond to demand,” he said.<\/p>\n

“I am excited to be working with a company that shares our community values, and bringing this project to life.”<\/p>\n

While not required immediately, the new plant will be capable of processing at three times the speed and overall volume of the current plant.<\/p>\n

The 4700sq m project – which will include the slaughter floor, freezer, chillers, amenities and offal rooms – will take about 12 months to complete.<\/p>\n

Note:<\/strong> In February this year the South Burnett Regional Council issued two development approvals to piggeries in Hivesville and Windera to expand their combined production from 11,700 standard pig units (SPU) to 42,250 SPU.<\/p>\n
