South Burnett councillor Ros Heit has urged any residents concerned about proposed cuts to Council support for community groups to speak out.<\/p>\n

She said there was a perception in the community the proposal to begin charging a fee to community groups for water, sewerage and garbage collection was “done and dusted”.<\/p>\n

South Burnett Mayor Keith Campbell floated the idea last week as a way to raise some of the $10 million needed to\u00a0be spent on the region\u2019s unsealed roads.<\/p>\n

Under the plan, community groups would be charged a portion of the cost of delivering\u00a0water, sewerage and garbage collection.<\/p>\n

They would pay 12.5 per cent of the cost in the 2018-19 Council Budget, increasing to 25 per cent in 2019-20.<\/p>\n

Representatives from a number of community groups have already expressed alarm about the proposal.<\/p>\n

Cr Heit said some people believed the decision had already been made, but this was not the case.<\/p>\n

She urged residents to speak to councillors – and not just their local councillor – if they had any concerns.<\/p>\n

The measures will be voted on at Council’s Budget meeting on June 25.<\/p>\n
