{"id":207021,"date":"2018-04-23T21:31:39","date_gmt":"2018-04-23T11:31:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=207021"},"modified":"2020-08-05T10:30:18","modified_gmt":"2020-08-05T00:30:18","slug":"garden-expo-blooms-in-sunshine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2018\/04\/23\/garden-expo-blooms-in-sunshine\/","title":{"rendered":"Garden Expo Blooms In Sunshine"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_207026\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-207026\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/20180421wondai1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-207026\" src=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/20180421wondai1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"740\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/20180421wondai1.jpg 620w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/20180421wondai1-300x186.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-207026\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Romaine Undery, from Ramesa Nursery at Gordonbrook, with Val Parker, from Wondai, who was stocking up on some colourful nasturtiums &#8230; Romaine&#8217;s husband Peter said there were queues at their stall just after the gates opened on Saturday morning<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>April 24, 2018<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The sunshine brought out biggest crowd seen in years &#8211; possibly, ever &#8211; at the Wondai Garden Expo at the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>By lunchtime on Saturday, an amazing 1700 people had passed through the gates.<\/p>\n<p>Stallholders that <strong>southburnett.com.au<\/strong> spoke to were all saying the same thing &#8230; they had been very, very busy.<\/p>\n<p>One was bemoaning the fact he had sold out of his major lines by 10:00am.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Speaking at the official opening, organising committee president Helen Young thanked the &#8220;huge number&#8221; of stallholders who had come along.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For every older stallholder who drops out we pick up up three new ones,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Helen said she had a wonderful committee and group of volunteers who turn up every weekend to prepare the area.<\/p>\n<p>She thanked the South Burnett Regional Council for their help but said she wished more Council staff actually came along to the event.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They do themselves a disservice by not coming,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>She said the Mayor and councillors regularly came along but not the people behind the scenes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They are the ones we have to talk to when we want a favour. We really, really need the back-up of Council &#8230; we are grateful for what we get, but to know that we are valued is great, too.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It takes a whole community to keep an event like this going and growing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mayor Keith Campbell said this was &#8220;a point that that can be taken on board&#8221;.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He said he was sometimes disappointed when he came to events to notice there were many people living in the local community who did not come along.<\/p>\n<p>But he said the Expo committee should be very proud of their efforts, noting there were &#8220;oceans of cars&#8221; parked out the front of the sportsground.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Deputy Mayor Kathy Duff said the Garden Expo had become a signature event for Wondai.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>She said sometimes Council staff were often around but didn&#8217;t make themselves known &#8230; for example, Tourism Officer Julie Foley had come to the Expo on Saturday morning.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was the first time she had been here and she was gobsmacked,&#8221; Cr Duff said.<\/p>\n<p>She said the facility (Wondai Sportsground) belonged to Council but the volunteers were doing a marvellous job looking after it and &#8220;we keep that front and centre at Council&#8221;.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_207035\" #006699;\"><strong>South Burnett Orchid Society Annual Show<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>The South Burnett Orchid Society&#8217;s annual show at the Wondai RSL Club attracted a good crowd as well as 170 entries from 18 exhibitors.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Exhibitors came from as far away as Noosa, Maroochydore, Bundaberg and Maryborough.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_207024\"
