Toowoomba Regional Council plans to begin work next Monday on a revamp of the historic Goombungee War Memorial which will spell the end of the surrounding garden bed.<\/p>\n

The changes will form part of construction work currently underway in Mocatta Street.<\/p>\n

Cr Joe Ramia said the plans for the State Heritage-listed War Memorial Precinct would reflect “extensive consultation with the community and key stakeholders such as the RSL”.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe proposed works preserve the memorial\u2019s historical significance, whilst enhancing the memorial setting and the immediate surrounds,” Cr Ramia said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe plan seeks to remove the garden bed and associated wall surrounding the memorial, which impedes views of the memorial and detracts from its appearance.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cr Carol Taylor said the Mocatta Street works would complement the war memorial.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThe road around the memorial is intended to be a \u2018shared\u2019 zone for small vehicle traffic only, and the memorial will be protected by a new outer kerb barrier with bollards,\u201d Cr Taylor said.<\/p>\n

\u201cOther upgrade works will include new pedestrian footpaths with connections across Mocatta Street and road and car parking improvements.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAs part of the upgrade there will be traffic restrictions in place. Work will generally be carried out between 7:00am and 5:00pm, Monday to Friday, however some out-of-hours works may be required.\u201d<\/p>\n
