The South Burnett Regional Council voted unanimously today to accept a petition opposing the sale of a portion of Adermann Park to the adjoining St Johns Lutheran School.<\/p>\n

The petition was assembled by Greens Candidate for Maranoa Grant Newson and signed by South Burnett residents opposed to the sale.<\/p>\n

Mr Newson said last week he’d originally given the petition to council staff for presentation to council on October 31 last year.<\/p>\n

But when it hadn’t been listed on the November meeting’s minutes, he’d given it to Crs Barry Green and Deb Palmer on December 11 so it could be presented at the following meeting in December.<\/p>\n

Today the SBRC voted to accept the petition and “forward it to the Department of Natural Resources and Mines for their consideration”.<\/p>\n

The Department of Natural Resources is currently deciding whether it will allow the sale of a portion of the park to St John’s school.<\/p>\n

The school would like to acquire approximately 40 per cent of the park to allow for future expansion.<\/p>\n

Mr Newson said after the meeting he was pleased the council had accepted the petition but still felt residents who’d signed it were being given “the brush off”.<\/p>\n

“We wanted the council to withdraw a letter of support for the sale of the park they’d given the State Government before the public were even consulted about it,” he said.<\/p>\n

“This issue wasn’t discussed at all.<\/p>\n

“Council are simply forwarding the petition on without considering whether they should alter their own position on the park’s sale, given that they’re now aware a considerable number of residents are opposed to it.”<\/p>\n
