{"id":206524,"date":"2018-04-17T16:00:31","date_gmt":"2018-04-17T06:00:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=206524"},"modified":"2018-04-17T17:52:02","modified_gmt":"2018-04-17T07:52:02","slug":"union-calls-for-social-media-regulation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2018\/04\/17\/union-calls-for-social-media-regulation\/","title":{"rendered":"Union Calls For Social Media Regulation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>April 17, 2018<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance &#8211; the union that covers Australian journalists &#8211; has called for digital giants such as Google, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to be regulated in Australia just like other broadcast companies.<\/p>\n<p>In a submission to the ACCC\u2019s digital platforms inquiry, the MEAA said that in the wake of growing concerns about fake news and propaganda, the inappropriate leaking of individual consumers&#8217; data, and the failure to curb online bullying and offensive content, Facebook and Google should be regulated similarly to broadcasters by the Australian Communications and Media Authority.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The union said the digital companies should also be forced to contribute a percentage of their revenue towards public interest journalism as Australian publishers and content creators were not being compensated for the use of their media content.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The MEAA has also called for an\u00a0effective &#8220;good faith&#8221; requirement to be included in collective bargaining authorisations under Section 88 of the Competition and Consumer Act to enable Australian media companies to engage in mutually satisfactory commercial negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>The union called for a\u00a0fast-tracking of the Productivity Commission\u2019s recommendations for a new Comprehensive Right for consumers to control their data, the creation of a new Data Sharing and Release Act, and an\u00a0increase in maximum penalties for mass privacy\/data breaches.<\/p>\n<p>Consumers should also be provided with plain language information about safeguards to protect their private data.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>External link: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.meaa.org\/mediaroom\/meaa-submission-to-the-accc-inquiry-into-digital-platforms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MEAA Submission To ACCC Inquiry<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance &#8211; the union that covers Australian journalists &#8211; has called for digital giants such as Google, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to be regulated in Australia just like other broadcast companies.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":20,"featured_media":206526,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[5,3],"tags":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v19.11 -
