This wall of quilts will soon be winging their way to foreign battlefields to provide comfort to Aussie troops, thanks to a multi-month effort by the Nanango Country Quilters and Crafts group<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

April 11, 2018<\/strong><\/p>\n

Visitors to this year’s 109th Nanango Show with a fondness for quilting will be able to see something special this year.<\/p>\n

The Nanango Country Quilters and Crafts Group will be displaying 30 hand-made Aussie Hero quilts and matching laundry bags that they’ll be shipping to Australia Defence Force (ADF) personnel serving overseas once the Show is over.<\/p>\n

The group’s members have spent months patiently stitching the quilts and laundry bags as part of the national Aussie Hero quilt movement.<\/p>\n

“We hope these quilts will bring a little bit of home comfort to our men and women while they face an extended time away from their families,” group coordinator Jan Stevens said.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“The pleasure we get from knowing that our time and effort is welcomed on the battlefront is ample reward.<\/p>\n

“We also want to show our Defence Force personnel how much we appreciate their efforts to keep us all safe.”<\/p>\n

The quilts have been designed to fit on defence force bunks, and the vibrantly coloured laundry bags will mark each quilt as a special item amongst standard military laundry bags.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The group’s members have donated all the materials for the quilts and bags from their own haberdashery collections, and the ADF will ship and distribute the quilts at no charge when the group’s work is finished.<\/p>\n

The Country Quilters have also sewn a special Australian-themed quilt that will be auctioned at the show to help pay for materials that can be used for future community-based projects.<\/p>\n

A similar auction last year raised more than $200.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Nanango Country Quilters and Crafts group meet at the Nanango Cultural Centre in George Street every Wednesday morning between 9:00am and noon.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Members can get to pursue a wide variety of crafts, and the $3 meeting fee includes morning tea (but BYO cup and lunch).<\/p>\n

There’s also usually a raffle as well.<\/p>\n

The group has 30 members but new ones are always welcome, and can either phone Tricia on (07) 4171-0124 for more details or just turn up.<\/p>\n

The group will also be holding a Biggest Morning Tea on May 23 to raise funds for the Queensland Cancer Council.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Apart from a fun morning tea, there’ll also be a sale table and a silent auction.<\/p>\n
