Proston looks set to have a new annual community celebration following the success of the Easter Parade and Proston Regatta on Saturday.<\/p>\n

The parade was organised by the Proston QCWA and featured 15 floats, representing a wide range of local community groups.<\/p>\n

Residents lined Blake Street to watch the parade, which moved steadily down towards Railway Park where there were stalls and community games awaiting.<\/p>\n

QCWA President Val Klein said the event had been “really, absolutely wonderful”.<\/p>\n

“It brought the whole area together,” she said.<\/p>\n

“And I believe all the stallholders did really well, too.”<\/p>\n

Immediately following the QCWA event, the park became the site of the inaugural Proston Regatta, a fund-raising event for charity organised by the Coverty Creek Community Development and Social Club Inc.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Club treasurer Julie Chippindale said the Coverty group organised the event after the Proston Round Table (the local business and progress association) discussed various ideas for ways to attract people to Proston.<\/p>\n

She said the Easter event had been a “learning curve” but the group was keen to to do it again next year.<\/p>\n

The “regatta” consisted of cardboard and polypipe “boats”, made at a small charge by the Coverty group for local not-for-profit groups, negotiating a 300m course near the Proston BMX track.<\/p>\n

Members of the public could also hire a boat to have a go for $2.50.<\/p>\n

After completing the course at “Treasure Island”, the boat crews pulled an egg out of a Treasure Chest lucky dip to determine their prize.<\/p>\n

Julie said there were about 80 prizes, ranging from simple novelty items to vouchers and real prizes donated by sponsors.<\/p>\n

The second-last Regatta event of the day was for not-for-profit and community groups.<\/p>\n

Proston Over 50s (with a bit of help from Proston SES) took home the $50 prize.<\/p>\n

The final event was the sponsors’ trophy, which was won by a very happy (and tired) team of Val Klein and treasurer Eileen Vos, from Proston QCWA.<\/p>\n
