{"id":204672,"date":"2018-03-20T11:51:32","date_gmt":"2018-03-20T01:51:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=204672"},"modified":"2020-08-06T10:19:18","modified_gmt":"2020-08-06T00:19:18","slug":"fire-permits-cancelled-for-games","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2018\/03\/20\/fire-permits-cancelled-for-games\/","title":{"rendered":"Fire Permits Cancelled For Games"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_189233\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-189233\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/20170907fire2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-189233\" src=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/20170907fire2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"740\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/20170907fire2.jpg 620w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/20170907fire2-300x186.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-189233\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Commonwealth Games organisers are worried that smoke from fires could disrupt Games&#8217; venues or main transport routes<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>March 20, 2018<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Residents in Gympie, Toowoomba and Somerset council areas will be banned from lighting certain types of fires from next Monday to lower the risk to the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.<\/p>\n<p>Fire permit restrictions will be imposed from 12:01am Monday, March 26, to 11:59pm Friday, April 20 in 14 Local Government Areas: Brisbane, Gold Coast, Gympie, Ipswich, Lockyer Valley, Moreton Bay, Logan, Noosa, Redland, Scenic Rim, Somerset, Southern Downs, Sunshine Coast and Toowoomba.<\/p>\n<p>The South Burnett Regional Council area will not be affected.<\/p>\n<p>Under the restrictions, residents or landholders seeking to burn vegetation will not be granted permits.<\/p>\n<p>Permits previously issued in the specified areas during the restriction period will also be cancelled.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rural Fire Service Acting Assistant Commissioner Gary McCormack said the restrictions were intended to prevent smoke and ash affecting Games venues and transport corridors.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cFortunately, recent rainfall has helped to increase soil moisture and bless us with a green landscape,\u201d Mr McCormack said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis means the bushfire threat in the coming weeks is low. However, we will impose fire permit restrictions as a precautionary measure to further minimise the risk of a fire taking hold.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr McCormack said some fires would still be permitted under the restrictions, including fires less than two metres in any direction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA fire lit outdoors for the purpose of cooking or warmth is also permitted, as long as it is enclosed in a fireplace constructed to stop the fire escaping,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCampfires go hand-in-hand with camping and we know that many people like to escape to the bush or beach on a camping trip at this time of year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe key is to ensure you start, maintain and extinguish your campfire safely and correctly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNever leave a campfire unattended and always use water to extinguish it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other fires permitted within the restriction period are fires lit for the purpose of burning the carcass of a beast and fires lit at a sawmill for the purpose of
