Kaitlin Moat, from Nanango, is the lucky 2018 recipient of South Burnett Women’s $5000 Dr Ellen Mary Kent Hughes Memorial Scholarship.<\/p>\n

The 2018 bursary recipient was announced at the International Women’s Day breakfast at Cassis on Thursday morning.<\/p>\n

Elizabeth Williams, from SB Women, said the process to select Kaitlin had been “quite competitive”.<\/p>\n

However, she said after conducting the interviews, one candidate stood out.<\/p>\n

Kaitlin had been dux at Nanango State High School and earned an OP1.<\/p>\n

She was also involved in community activities, including fundraising for Relay For Life.<\/p>\n

However, it was maturity, and her decision to defer her studies for a year so she could earn enough money to be self-supporting at university, which had impressed the judges.<\/p>\n

“It was obvious as soon as she walked into the room that she was ready to go ahead,” Elizabeth said.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The guest speaker at the South Burnett Women’s breakfast was Queensland Rural Regional and Remote Women’s Network president Melissa Barnett, who lives at Haly Creek.<\/p>\n

Melissa spoke about the non-linear nature of life … the ups and downs … which had brought her to the South Burnett.<\/p>\n

She praised the South Burnett Community Leadership Program – organised by the Red Earth Foundation – and South Burnett Women.<\/p>\n

“The women of the South Burnett are the most inspiring, supportive and community-minded women that I have ever met,” she said.<\/p>\n

SB Women president Caroline Cavanagh thanked the 10 sponsorship partners for the bursary: South Burnett CTC, Peanut Company of Australia, Bean Growers Australia, Swickers, Deb Frecklington MP, Christene Nissan & Associates, SBcare, Kewpie, Schuey Brothers and the South Burnett District Law Association.<\/p>\n
