A support group for people in the South Burnett region with Parkinson\u2019s Disease, their families and carers will kick off on Monday (January 14).<\/p>\n

The support group will be hosted at Orana Lutheran Complex’s new community hub in Kingaroy.<\/p>\n

As well as the Parkinson’s group, Orana is now also hosting a Telehealth service, the South Burnett Police Citizens Youth over 50s Strong Healthy Active Body, and the RSL Veterans Drop-In Centre.<\/p>\n

Parkinson’s Disease is a progressively degenerative neurological disorder which affects the control of body movements.<\/p>\n

Around 35 people will gather at the free monthly meeting \u2014 which is open to the public \u2014 to set out this year\u2019s agenda, discuss guest speakers and enjoy morning tea.<\/p>\n

South Burnett Parkinson’s Support Group Joint Co-ordinator Maree Millard said Orana was the perfect venue for the group’s meetings and encouraged people to come along.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to give people the emotional support they need and share ideas,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to see it go on, grow and become a support mechanism for the community.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe also like to be able to educate the community about Parkinson\u2019s Disease and make them aware anyone can be struck down with it.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt affects around 17,000 people in Queensland.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are probably people and residents at Orana with the disease and we can reach out to them as well.\u201d<\/p>\n

The support group’s future meetings will be held on the second Monday of each month from 10:00am to 2:00pm.<\/p>\n
