The trial of underground coal gasification (UCG) company Linc Energy began in the Brisbane District Court on Monday.<\/p>\n

The company, which is in liquidation, faces five charges of wilfully causing environmental damage at its UCG site near Chinchilla.<\/p>\n

The trial is expected to run into April as more than 70 witnesses are expected to be called by the Crown.<\/p>\n

In 2009, the State Government established a process for three companies, including Linc Energy, to trial UCG operations on a small scale in Queensland.<\/p>\n

UCG involves converting coal to a synthetic gas by burning coal underground.<\/p>\n

Linc Energy entered voluntary administration in 2016, a month after it was committed to face trial on the five charges in the District Court.<\/p>\n
