developing a tourism centre for peanuts were two ideas for growing tourism to come out of a recent forum organised by the South Burnett Regional Council.

Tourism chair Cr Danita Potter told last week’s Council meeting industry feedback from the ‘South Burnett Unpacked’ tourism forum held at Yallakool on November 23 had now been collated.

Other ideas for building tourism included slashing accommodation charges at the region’s two dams by 50 per cent during the low season; developing a water park similar to one at Bli Bli; running a paddock to plate festival; asking the South Burnett PCYC to run more activities; and encouraging PCA to offer factory tours.

Some guests thought the region’s wineries should get together to run regional wine tours, some thought Council should be pushing the Discover South Burnett brand at Regional Flavours rather than South Burnett Directions, while others thought events should clearly communicate who runs them.

And at least one forum attendee thought ‘more promotion’ was the answer.

Cr Potter said the next quarterly South Burnett Unpacked will be held at the Bunya Mountains on February 20, and Bunya Mountains tourist operators will be invited to make presentations.

The Blackbutt Visitor Information Centre will also be taking the opportunity to familiarise its volunteers with the area.

In other tourism news, Cr Potter told the meeting that RACQ’s Road Ahead will be holding a media familiarisation in early March for an article focussing on a family weekend in the South Burnett.

And the Drive Inland Promotion Association is currently working with the Queensland Outdoor Recreation Federation to share links to the South Burnett and other regions along Australia’s Country Way and other routes.

The Discover South Burnett website is also being reviewed and will be updated to take on a seasonal look and feel.

Related article: Council To Unpack
