Former police officer Llew O’Brien – now the Member for Wide Bay – has seen hundreds of road crashes during his career and sights that most people, thankfully, never have to see.<\/p>\n

For that reason, his Christmas wishes and warnings to take extra care on the roads carry weight.<\/p>\n

“Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ whose love brought salvation and the message of peace and goodwill to all,” Mr O’Brien said.<\/p>\n

“During this busy time of year, that peace and goodwill is more important than ever, particularly when it comes to road safety.<\/p>\n

“With more traffic on the roads as people travel to see loved ones, it is especially important to be patient, take care, pay attention to conditions and speed limits, and most importantly, to stay sober if you get behind the wheel.<\/p>\n

“Throughout my policing career, road safety has been something I care deeply about, and I pray every year that no families have to suffer the anguish of losing a loved one on our roads.<\/p>\n

“We also remember those who work hard during this festive period to keep our communities healthy, safe and secure \u2013 our nurses, doctors, emergency workers and police who keep our services running and roads open, and those who sacrifice time with their own loved ones to care for the aged and disabled.<\/p>\n

“As we celebrate with family and friends, it is important to remember the people in our community who are less fortunate \u2013 those who have lost someone dear to them, the jobless, the sick, the homeless and the lonely – and consider what we might be able to do to comfort those in need.<\/p>\n

“Loneliness can affect all kinds of people \u2013 old or young, living in their own homes or in residential aged care. I know it is all too easy for people to become cut off from their communities, family and friends, and sadly, that can make Christmas the worst time of year for the lonely.<\/p>\n

“That\u2019s why I\u2019m making a special appeal to everyone to reach out this festive season, by saying hello to your neighbour or someone new in the area, checking in on people who may need a friendly chat, volunteering, and being kind in person and on social media.<\/p>\n

“Everyone deserves to receive love, company and compassion, especially around Christmas.<\/p>\n

“My wife Sharon and I hope everyone is able to celebrate a peaceful and safe Christmas, and we wish all in Wide Bay a successful 2018.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
