Eight poisoned trees in Drayton and Fitzroy streets, Nanango, had only just been trimmed by the South Burnett Regional Council, Cr Roz Frohloff said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

The trees were part of the recent Nanango CBD streetscape project.<\/p>\n

\u201cCouncil has only just recently trimmed these Leopardwood trees in response to a request,” Cr Frohloff said.<\/p>\n

“Now with these trees dying; it is just a total waste of ratepayers’ money. The actions of those responsible is just incomprehensible.”<\/p>\n

A Council spokesperson said the trees’ replacement would be a significant cost to the community and ratepayers.<\/p>\n

And as some chemicals used for poisoning plants are residual, it was likely the soil would contain a level of contamination.<\/p>\n

This would mean when Council replaces the trees, the soil would also\u00a0need to be replaced.<\/p>\n

Mayor Keith Campbell said the thoughtless and selfish act had affected many in the community.<\/p>\n

“It was inexcusable,” he said.<\/p>\n

“I encourage anybody who has seen or heard anything in relation to this vandalism to please report it to the police or Crime Stoppers.”<\/p>\n
