The State Government is encouraging everyone to get ready and start preparing now for the imminent storm season.<\/p>\n

Minister for Communities Shannon Fentiman said there were a number of things Queenslanders could do now to be better prepared for any storms or disasters that could impact their communities in the coming months.<\/p>\n

“This includes getting to know your neighbours so that you can check on each other \u2013 both after a warning is issued to let them know what your plans are, and in the aftermath of a disaster to make sure they are safe,” she said.<\/p>\n

“Make plans to keep your pets or livestock safe during a disaster. Pets may not be able to go into evacuation shelters and hotels, so consider how you can keep them safe and fed if you need to leave.<\/p>\n

“You should also secure your property against damage and ensure your insurance is up to date and that you have sufficient cover to enable you to rebuild your home or replace your goods.<\/p>\n

“Finally, make preparations with your family in case you need to evacuate that take into account possible scenarios \u2013 such as a loss of telephone or power services, or if you are separated from family members \u2013 and how you will respond. Create a checklist.”<\/p>\n

Ms Fentiman said the State Government was already working hard to help individuals, communities and organisations be better prepared for storms and disasters.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A toolkit for community groups has been developed which provides community organisations with guidance and resources on how to plan and prepare for a disaster.<\/p>\n

“It means community organisations will be more disaster-prepared and resilient and better placed to support vulnerable people who are affected by any future disasters,” Ms Fentiman said.<\/p>\n

The government has also published fact sheets in a number of different languages along with easy-to-read English and symbolic representations for people with disability or reading difficulties.<\/p>\n
