Construction of Cherbourg’s new $15 million wastewater treatment plant has begun.<\/p>\n

Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Mark Furner said on Monday the new infrastructure will ensure\u00a0Cherbourg\u00a0will have a low-maintenance and long-lasting wastewater solution.<\/p>\n

It is replacing a 60-year-old treatment plant.<\/p>\n

Stage 1 of the project began with earthworks for a series of ponds on a site away from the township entrance and homes.<\/p>\n

Stage 2 will begin next month and will include new pump stations and irrigation systems to provide water source options for agriculture.<\/p>\n

The new wastewater treatment plant is expected to be completed by May next year.<\/p>\n

Cherbourg Mayor Arnold Murray said the council has been working with the State Government to identify the best sustainable water treatment solutions.<\/p>\n
