Young people undergoing cancer treatments at the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital will enjoy a bit of home-style comfort thanks to two local craft groups.<\/p>\n

The Cooinda Craft Group in Kingaroy and the Country Quilters in Nanango have had their sewing machines running hot, after the hospital put out a call for quilts for their teenage patients undergoing chemotherapy.<\/p>\n

The young people feel the cold as they are undergoing their treatments, so the hospital came up with the idea of quilts.<\/p>\n

The Nanango group sent down 33 quilts to the hospital in April.<\/p>\n

Now, the two groups will deliver another 28 to the hospital this week.<\/p>\n

The patients will get the chance to choose their own quilt, which they then bring back to the hospital each time they have a treatment.<\/p>\n

The quilters have made matching carrying bags for each quilt.<\/p>\n

Gwen Bisley, from the Cooinda Craft Group, said each quilt took a couple of days to make “if you were at it all the time”.<\/p>\n

Lois Vreeken, from Left Of Centre Quilting in Kingaroy, and Gail Newton professionally quilted the “tops” for no charge.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Cooinda group co-ordinator Rhonda Merton said new members were always welcome at the craft groups.<\/p>\n

“Don’t be shy, come along, have a cuppa, a chat and check out what we do,” she said.<\/p>\n

“Many different crafts are done, not only quilt-making and there’s always someone willing to help you.”<\/p>\n

Cooinda meets on Monday mornings from 9:00am to 1:30pm at the Town Common Hall in Oliver Bond Street, Kingaroy.<\/p>\n

The Nanango Country Quilters meet on Wednesdays from 8:00am to 2:00pm at the Nanango Cultural Centre in George Street, Nanango.<\/p>\n
