The South Burnett Regional Council announced on Wednesday it will make further cuts to its Regional Arts Development Fund.<\/p>\n

RADF, a 60\/40 partnership between Arts Queensland and the Council, offered a $68,888 pool of grants to South Burnett artists and arts groups in 2013-14.<\/p>\n

At that time the South Burnett ranked next to the Sunshine Coast as one of most arts-supportive councils in regional Queensland.<\/p>\n

However the Council began scaling the program back dramatically in 2016-17 when it slashed the total amount of funding to $15,486, which put the South Burnett only marginally ahead of the outback councils of Richmond ($11,200), Burke ($7000) and Bulloo ($1660).<\/p>\n

In 2017-18, it will scale the program back further to $12,500.<\/p>\n

$7500 of this will come from Arts Queensland, and the Council will make up the other $5000.<\/p>\n

RADF was designed to support professional artists and arts practitioners in regional Queensland, and has been in existence since 1991.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In 2014 the RADF program’s rules were revised by Arts Queensland to allow local councils and communities to have more say in how to structure and deliver the program to best suit their own needs.<\/p>\n

This change meant that RADF funding may now operate differently from one council to the next.<\/p>\n

At its January Council meeting, Councillors voted to adopt a new set of guidelines for how the RADF program would operate in the region in future.<\/p>\n

The new guidelines scaled back the types of activities the South Burnett\u2019s RADF program would support to just two:<\/p>\n

  • Technical and professional skills development, and<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
      \n
    • Local delivery and participation in the arts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      The new policy also dictated that successful grant applicants could only apply for a maximum of 50 per cent of their project\u2019s costs, rather than up to 100 per cent as had previously been the case.<\/p>\n
