The South Burnett Regional Council has announced the winners of a school art competition run to celebrate the opening of Kingaroy’s Wastewater Treatment Plant.<\/p>\n

The competition was sponsored by Aquatec Maxcon, who built the $25 million wastewater treatment plant, and was open to all students enrolled in South Burnett schools.<\/p>\n

Students could enter either a colouring-in competition, or design a poster to illustrate the role wastewater treatment plays within overall catchment management.<\/p>\n

The judges were Peter Ferrando, the Queensland State Manager of Aquatec Maxcon, and Cr Roz Frohloff, who chairs the Council’s Water and Wastewater portfolio.<\/p>\n

“The idea was to involve local students by challenging them to do something a little bit out of the ordinary and get them thinking about wastewater treatment,” Councillor Frohloff said.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“It is wonderful to see such a response from students throughout the South Burnett.”<\/p>\n

The colouring-in competition was divided into two categories: Prep to Year 2 and Year 3 to Year 6.<\/p>\n

Both these categories were hotly contested and the judges had to deliberate for some time to find the winners.<\/p>\n

The selection of the poster competition winners also saw some strong debate between the judges.<\/p>\n

Because there were no entries received in a final category for Year 11 and 12 students, though, Aquatec Maxcon provided additional Encouragement Awards of $10 each.<\/p>\n

“This art competition has encouraged students to think about where our wastewater ends up,” Mayor Keith Campbell said.<\/p>\n

“This benefits the environment and who knows? They may develop an interest and enter this field in the future.”<\/p>\n

The winning artworks will be framed and put on display at the Kingaroy Wastewater Treatment Plant.<\/p>\n
