{"id":18600,"date":"2012-12-05T23:58:17","date_gmt":"2012-12-05T13:58:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=18600"},"modified":"2023-12-19T14:12:59","modified_gmt":"2023-12-19T04:12:59","slug":"local-health-service-faces-6-1m-budget-black-hole","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2012\/12\/05\/local-health-service-faces-6-1m-budget-black-hole\/","title":{"rendered":"Local Health Service Faces<br> $6.1m Budget Black Hole"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_9686\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9686\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/20120828hospital3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9686\" title=\"20120828 Mike Horan Visit\" src=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/20120828hospital3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"433\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/20120828hospital3.jpg 300w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/20120828hospital3-208x300.jpg 208w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9686\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Darling Downs Regional Health Service Board Chairman Mike Horan during a visit to Cherbourg earlier this year<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>December 5, 2012<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A Federal Government funding recalculation which has slashed $6.1 million from the annual Budget of the Darling Downs Regional Health Service &#8211; halfway through the Budget year &#8211; has left the local health authority reeling.<\/p>\n<p>In the South Burnett, the health service operates Kingaroy, Nanango, Wondai, Murgon and Cherbourg hospitals as well as the Farrhome Nursing Care Unit.<\/p>\n<p>It is also responsible for hospitals in the Western Downs, Southern Downs, Goondiwindi and Banana council areas as well as Toowoomba.<\/p>\n<p>Darling Downs Regional Health Service (DDRHS) Board Chairman Mike Horan told <strong>southburnett.com.au<\/strong> today the Budget cut was &#8220;cruel&#8221; and &#8220;completely unexpected&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>He said the Board had been working hard to find savings in operating costs and was looking forward to having a small surplus at the end of the year which it would have spent on extra services.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But there&#8217;s no chance of that now,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Horan said it would be extremely difficult to cut $6.1 million out of a half-year Budget &#8211; especially as some of the cuts were retrospective &#8211; but the first priority was to the staff.<\/p>\n<p>He said the Board had a &#8220;policy of loyalty&#8221; to health staff and although savings had been found over the past few months, no one had lost their jobs.<\/p>\n<p>He said the Board would try to find more savings without putting off staff.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We will try to save the jobs of our people,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Horan said the DDRHS Board was only advised of the funding change last week.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We could have had a surplus at the end of the year to do more (elective) surgery but there is no way we will be able to it now,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Or it could have gone into emergency departments or wards. We hadn&#8217;t decided yet. But now it&#8217;s gone. We won&#8217;t have anything. We were trying to save money.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mr Horan said the DDRHS Executive and Finance Committee would meet next week to discuss the situation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">* * *<\/p>\n<p><strong>Queensland Health Minister Lawrence Springborg said a total of $342 million of Commonwealth Funding had been ripped from Queensland Health.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Labor Treasurer is saying that our population has fallen by 35,000 and that is why they are clawing back funding,&#8221; Mr Springborg said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Yet our figures, obtained by Queensland Treasury, estimate an increase of nearly 80,000 in the same period. You don\u2019t need a department full of economists to know that Queensland population is growing, not shrinking.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">* * *<\/p>\n<p><strong>Federal Member for Maranoa Bruce Scott said he was appalled by the cuts.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cRegional and rural communities are in need of improved facilities and services \u2013 we need to extend our reach in regional and remote area health, not take away funding,\u201d Mr Scott said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the Maranoa electorate alone, $7.9 million will be ripped from Hospital and Health Service Boards in the Darling Downs ($6.1 million), Central West ($600,000) and South West ($1.2 million).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProud towns like Kingaroy and Nanango \u2013 listed under the Darling Downs Health Board \u2013 will feel the pinch from these funding cuts.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">* * *<\/p>\n<p><strong>The cuts follow the release of the Federal Government&#8217;s &#8220;Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook&#8221; review in October.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Growth forecasts were adjusted based on ABS-revised population figures and lower-than-anticipated increases in health costs as a result of the high Australian dollar.<\/p>\n<p>Health Minister Tanya Plibersek said the adjustments were based on a formula agreed to by the Queensland Government &#8220;and suggestions to the contrary are deceitful rubbish&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>She said Federal Coalition MPs had joined with their State LNP counterparts to &#8220;peddle a dishonest campaign to draw attention away from the Newman Government\u2019s callous cuts&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is nothing but a shameless campaign to hide the LNP\u2019s shameful slash-and-burn Health Budget,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Federal Government funding recalculation which has slashed $6.1 million from the annual Budget of the Darling Downs Regional Health Service &#8211; halfway through the Budget year &#8211; has left the local health authority reeling.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":20,"featured_media":18651,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[172,3],"tags":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v19.11 -
