Kingaroy Police are aiming to “turn the screws on crime” with a special number plate morning on Saturday (July 22).<\/p>\n

Thieves target number plates for many reasons: to disguise vehicles during petrol drive-offs, during robberies, and in the vain hope that police won’t notice the wrong plates are fixed to an unregistered vehicle.<\/p>\n

The theft always causes a headache for the car owner: new plates have to be purchased and affixed, and insurance companies (and the RACQ, if a member) have to be notified.<\/p>\n

But there is a way to foil most number plate thieves … one-way screws.<\/p>\n

These can be fitted with a normal screw-driver but cannot be removed.<\/p>\n

On Saturday, local residents have been invited to bring along their vehicles to the area beside Kingaroy Repco in Youngman Street between 9:00am and noon to have one-way screws fitted to their number plates.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“It is a proactive exercise to address the stealing of number plates, and this event may go some way to preventing loss of plates,” Volunteer-in-Policing Peter Verbakel said.<\/p>\n

“This campaign has been held in a number of locations previously, and has always been well attended.<\/p>\n

“A small donation, to support the QPS Community Supporting Police Helping Hand program, will also bring with it a raffle ticket to enter the draw for a prize pack generously donated by Kingaroy Repco.”<\/p>\n
