The South Burnett Regional Council will try to map out a new path to grow the region’s tourism industry, which has been in the doldrums for several years.<\/p>\n

The Council announced on Thursday it will hold an all-day workshop soon to discuss future directions for regional tourism promotion.<\/p>\n

A Council spokesperson said the aim of the workshop was to foster discussion between Councillors, senior staff, the newly-formed Visit South Burnett local tourism organisation, the South Burnett Directions Tourism Reference Group and other tourism operators.<\/p>\n

The move comes after last week’s Budget revelation that revenues at the Council-operated Lake Boondooma and Yallakool tourist parks dropped by $225,000 over the past year.<\/p>\n

The shortfall occurred at a time when the Southern Queensland Country regional tourism organisation claimed tourism numbers hit a record high.<\/p>\n

\u201cTourism in the South Burnett is at a crossroads at the moment,” Mayor Keith Campbell said.<\/p>\n

“As one of the major tourism operators in the region, it\u2019s imperative Council work with all tourism organisations to assist and support their efforts.<\/p>\n

“An expected outcome from this workshop is that we will all work together to sell the South Burnett as a tourist destination, so it\u2019s essential that all operators take this opportunity to have their say.”<\/p>\n

The workshop will be held at the Glendon Street council chambers in Kingaroy from 9:00am to 4:00pm on Thursday, July 20.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Interested groups and individuals who’d like to take part will need to RSVP by July 12.<\/p>\n
