The opening may have been a bit delayed – the $1.2m station was actually built in 2012 – but that took nothing away from the official opening ceremony for the “new” Cherbourg Fire Station on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The junior Wakka Wakka dancers performed to an appreciative crowd of onlookers, which included Cherbourg Elders, local residents, senior officers from the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services and police representatives.<\/p>\n

Member for Bundaberg Leanne Donaldson, Cherbourg Mayor Arnold Murray and QFES Commissioner Katarina Carroll did the honours, unveiling the plaque to officially open the station.<\/p>\n

Commissioner Carroll said it was especially fitting that the opening ceremony was occurring during NAIDOC Week.<\/p>\n

She praised the Cherbourg community for supporting the station … in 2012, there were just two auxiliary firefighters at Cherbourg; now there were 11.<\/p>\n

Commissioner Carroll said a strong partnership had also grown between Cherbourg Council and the QFES.<\/p>\n

A highlight of the opening ceremony was the announcement that the Training Room in the building would be named after the late Jack Combo Snr.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Jack was a foundation member of the original fire brigade and served with it from 1976 to 1984.<\/p>\n

His son, Jack Combo Jnr, is a current firefighter at the station and many members of the Combo family were present for the ceremony.<\/p>\n
