A year-long effort to seal the South Burnett Rail Trail between Kingaroy and Murgon has now come to an end.<\/p>\n

Cr Ros Heit announced on Friday that the final section of the trail between Barambah Creek and Murgon has been finished.<\/p>\n

While some chicanes and signage still need to be installed, trail users will now be able to walk, run or cycle the full 42km on a sealed surface.<\/p>\n

The completion of the trail has come several weeks earlier than expected.<\/p>\n

In early June when the trail was sealed between Wondai and Barambah Creek, it was expected the final stretch to Murgon would not be finished until the end of July.<\/p>\n

But completion of the sealing has come just in time for a Fun Ride between Wondai and Murgon that will be held as part of Saturday’s Wondai Country Festival.<\/p>\n

Cr Heit thanked the workers who’ve been labouring on the project – on and off – for more than a year.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Rail Trail sealing work began last June, but was delayed soon afterwards by unseasonal winter rainfall.<\/p>\n

It was then further delayed by the need to excuse the sealing contractor from the project for several months earlier this year so they could assist with Swickers’ reconstruction efforts.<\/p>\n

The completion of the trail means the South Burnett is now the only region in Queensland that is home to two rail trails.<\/p>\n

The South Burnett Regional Council operates the Blackbutt to Linville section of the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail, as well as the South Burnett Rail Trail between Kingaroy and Murgon.<\/p>\n

Gympie Regional Council will control its own Rail Trail between the South Burnett’s borders and Kilkivan; that portion of the trail is currently under construction.<\/p>\n

The South Burnett Rail Trail is expected to be officially opened on the October long weekend.<\/p>\n

But for all practical purposes, the Rail Trail can now be used by residents and visitors providing they observe precautions at road crossings until the final chicanes are in place.<\/p>\n
