Theatre goers can expect several big surprises this August when the South Burnett Musical Comedy Society raise the curtain on their next show.<\/p>\n

The society will be debuting its version of the Broadway musical The Wizard Of Oz, based on Frank Baum’s fairytale about Dorothy and her dog Toto who are transported to the mysterious land of Oz by a cyclone.<\/p>\n

Dorothy soon meets the Scarecrow (who needs a brain), the Tin Man (who needs a heart) and the Lion (who needs courage) and persuades them to join her on a journey along the Yellow Brick Road to meet the fabled Wizard of Oz so they can all ask his help.<\/p>\n

Along they way, they battle many perils including the Wicked Witch of the West, Winkle soldiers and flying monkeys … but in the end, they all find what they’re looking for and Dorothy and Toto eventually return home to Kansas.<\/p>\n

The production of the Wizard Of Oz follows the society’s successful March performances of Jesus Christ Superstar, which drew good audiences and very positive reactions.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The new show will feature a record 60 performers – 30 of them South Burnett school children from Kingaroy, Murgon, Kumbia and Nanango – and some dazzling special effects, including 3D theatrical projection screens never seen in the region before.<\/p>\n

Many well-known local actors such as Brad Boynton and Clowry Kennell will be playing major roles along with several talented newcomers, including two who’ll share the role of the Wicked Witch of the West.<\/p>\n

Director Craig Reiger said he’s looking forward to bringing the show to the South Burnett (and Maryborough).<\/p>\n

There will be six performances at Kingaroy Town Hall, and another at Maryborough’s Brolga Theatre.<\/p>\n

The society began recruiting actors for the show in February but only began rehearsals this month.<\/p>\n

On Sunday, most members of the cast gathered at Kingaroy State High School’s auditorium for their second run-through of some of the dance routines, and are already looking remarkably polished.<\/p>\n

Cast members told southburnett.com.au<\/strong> they were “very excited” about the show and looking forward to performing it for local audiences in three months time.<\/p>\n
