{"id":178267,"date":"2017-05-16T14:56:39","date_gmt":"2017-05-16T04:56:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=178267"},"modified":"2020-09-17T12:32:45","modified_gmt":"2020-09-17T02:32:45","slug":"deadly-plant-pest-knocking-at-door","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2017\/05\/16\/deadly-plant-pest-knocking-at-door\/","title":{"rendered":"Deadly Plant Pest Knocking At Door"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_178268\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-178268\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/oleander.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-178268\" title=\"Oleander bushes\" src=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/oleander.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"740\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/oleander.jpg 620w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/oleander-300x186.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-178268\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Oleander bushes in Arizona infected with the Xylella fastidiosa bacterium (Photo: I, Pompilid)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>May 16, 2017<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>International experts will be gathering in Brisbane this week to swap information and strengthen Australia\u2019s defences against one of the world\u2019s most devastating plant pests, Xylella fastidiosa.<\/p>\n<p>The bacterium &#8211; which cannot be treated at present &#8211; originated in the Americas and is now present in Europe, China and Iran<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(It) is a deadly and highly invasive plant pest that has wreaked havoc on Californian grape growers and wiped out more than a million ancient olive trees in southern Italy,\u201d Australian Chief Plant Protection Officer Dr Kim Ritman said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile the quickly spreading bacterium is not yet present in Australia, last year Xylella came in at number one in Australia\u2019s Top 40 National Priority Plant Pests.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cXylella bacterium has the potential to severely hurt our citrus, grape, olive, peach, plum and forestry industries.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dr Ritman said the 2017 International Symposium on Xylella fastidiosa was a critical forum for addressing Australia&#8217;s ability to detect the disease, and if detected, the nation&#8217;s preparedness to respond quickly and implement effective management processes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have gathered experts from France, Italy, New Zealand, Taiwan, the United States, as well as Australian speakers, who will share their knowledge and experience with this so-far-untreatable plant pest,&#8221; Dr Ritman said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe symposium means Australia will benefit from international expertise and take a scientific approach to manage this major threat, continuing to ensure this serious biosecurity risk stays offshore.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAustralia\u2019s biosecurity system is built on a partnership approach involving government, industry, scientists, experts and the general public all working together to protect our agricultural industries &#8230; and unique environment from pests and diseases present in many other parts of the world.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWhile the biosecurity work we do in Australia . . . helps to manage the risk, support from the public as well as producers is crucial in ensuring this devastating pest continues to stay offshore. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cProducers need to be taking proactive measures to identify and report any unusual pest or disease symptoms, minimising the likelihood of disease coming onto their farms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSimilarly, the general public has a role to play: by not bringing plants or seeds into Australia through the airport or mail, we can work together to keep Australia Xylella-free.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>International experts will be gathering in Brisbane this week to swap information and strengthen Australia\u2019s defences against one of the world\u2019s most devastating plant pests, Xylella fastidiosa.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":20,"featured_media":178268,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[3,36],"tags":[1134],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v19.11 -
