The man charged with overseeing Toowoomba region\u2019s water supply, sewerage and waste management services is retiring from local government.<\/p>\n

Water and Waste Services General Manager Kevin Flanagan has had a council career spanning more than 40 years, first joining Toowoomba City Council in 1989.<\/p>\n

He was promoted to Director of Engineering Services at Toowoomba City Council in 1999, before being appointed as General Manager of Water and Waste for the newly amalgamated Toowoomba Regional Council in 2008.<\/p>\n

Mayor Paul Antonio said Council owed a debt of gratitude to the engineer.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cKevin leaves a range of legacies for this community but front of my mind will always be the way he oversaw Council\u2019s water operations during one of the most difficult periods in history for this community,” Mayor Antonio said.<\/p>\n

“We can never forget that during the first 10 years of this century, Toowoomba and the surrounding region was in the grip of a severe drought and at its worst, we saw our water reserves dwindle to just over 7 per cent.”<\/p>\n

In 2008, Mr Flanagan led negotiations with the State Government for the delivery of the Wivenhoe Pipeline, which secured 10,000 megalitres of water per year for Toowoomba.<\/p>\n

“This was catalytic in sustaining our region\u2019s future and growth,\u201d Mayor Antonio said.<\/p>\n
