have won a sought-after “RV Friendly” designation

May 8, 2017

Murgon and Wondai have become the South Burnett’s second and third RV Friendly towns, following in the footsteps of Nanango which gained the distinction last August.

The Campervan And Motorhome Club Of Australia (CMCA) added both towns to its list of 64 “RV Friendly” Queensland towns last week.

The CMCA represents more than 66,000 members, and is the largest RV club in the southern hemisphere.

The self-contained RV tourism market is currently estimated to be worth more than $2.5 billion annually, and the number of registered RVs in Australia is expected to grow to more than 700,000 vehicles by 2020.

The CMCA, which aims to create partnerships between RV tourists and the towns they visit, hopes to maximise the value of RV tourism to metropolitan and regional Australia.

In order to qualify for the “RV Friendly” program, towns must satisfy a number of criteria including:

Access to a general shopping area

Provision of appropriate low cost overnight parking for self-contained vehicles, and

Access to potable water and a free dump point

The CMCA believes both towns should see some direct benefits from joining the RV Friendly Town network.

Murgon and Wondai will be promoted to RV travellers across Australia through the CMCA club magazine The Wanderer, as well as the CMCA website and social media.

Murgon Business and Development Association president Leo Geraghty has welcomed the announcement.

“We have been pushing for some time to get ‘RV Friendly’ status,” Leo said.

“Murgon’s free short-stay camping area has been very successful in attracting caravanners to Murgon, and we believe the number of caravanners passing through the South Burnett has risen in the past few years as word about our region’s free camping areas has spread.

“We’ve seen direct benefits for many of Murgon’s businesses from this, and I’m sure Nanango and Wondai will as well.”

Mr Geraghty also paid tribute to Deputy Mayor Kathy Duff and the South Burnett Regional Council for supporting the initiative.

“We have been working at gaining RV Friendly accreditation for some time,” he said.

“Their support for this initiative has been invaluable.”

Related articles:

<a
