Water Police will be out in force over the Easter long weekend patrolling dams to ensure the safety of boaties and their passengers.<\/p>\n

A police spokesman said just like motorists travelling on Queensland roads, boaties must be aware of the potential dangers on the water, including speeding, drink and drug driving, fatigue, and distraction and inattention.<\/p>\n

Patrolling police would also be encouraging the use of responsible boating practices to make sure everyone had a safe and enjoyable Easter long weekend.<\/p>\n

He said the main focus of Water Police patrols included:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Ensuring masters\/skippers of vessels were not under the influence of alcohol and\/or drugs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
      \n
    • Safe operation of vessels including speed, and distances from other persons\/vessels in the water<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
        \n
      • Expired flares and unregistered EPIRBs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
          \n
        • Ensuring children were wearing properly fitted lifejackets<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
            \n
          • Correct navigational lights being displayed when operating vessels at night, including ensuring the lights were working prior to departure<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            Water Police Acting Inspector Jim Whitehead said boaties could expect to see extra Water Police patrolling inland waterways, dams and lakes.<\/p>\n

            \u201cWe\u2019re asking boaties to exercise patience at boat ramps and to use common sense when out on the water,” Acting Inspector Whitehead said.<\/p>\n

            \u201cLet your family or friends know about your plans, and when you anticipate you\u2019ll be returning to shore. Remember, \u2018You\u2019re the skipper \u2013 you\u2019re responsible\u2019.<\/p>\n

            \u201cYour actions not only affect those on board your vessel, but those in close proximity.<\/p>\n

            \u201cAnd if weather conditions take a turn for the worse, don\u2019t take unnecessary risks and stay off the water.<\/p>\n
