Wilkesdale resident Owen Townsend is calling for a dedicated stoma nurse at the Kingaroy Hospital, and he has gained the backing of local MP Deb Frecklington.<\/p>\n

Stomas are artificial openings in the lower abdomen created by surgery to remove body wastes; a stoma nurse helps patients who have had a colostomy or ileostomy.<\/p>\n

Mrs Frecklington said Owen had approached her to highlight the fact there was no stoma nurse available in the South Burnett, following the retirement of the previous nurse.<\/p>\n

\u201cMr Townsend explained that he regularly travels to Brisbane for check-ups and appointments, however, if there is an emergency situation, there is not an equipped stoma nurse to assist patients at the Kingaroy Public Hospital,\u201d Mrs Frecklington said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was pleased to learn that Markwell Medical Centre also identified the need and have started a free clinic, however, I believe this is a key service which should also be available through the public system.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe believe there may be at least 40 people who would benefit from this support.<\/p>\n

“Previously, the service was provided by Anne Davoren who has now retired. I\u2019d like to thank Anne for the work she has done and continues to offer voluntarily in this field.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn behalf of Mr Townsend and other people across the region who have a stoma bag, I\u2019m calling on the State Government to provide funding for this specialised nursing service for the South Burnett.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Owen is also hoping to establish a Stoma Support Group in the region.<\/p>\n
