A new committee has breathed fresh life into the annual Murgon Show, which had been hard hit in recent years by drought and floods.<\/p>\n

Taking the reins this year are president Joan Adams, secretary Lesley Thun and treasurer Trent Wayford.<\/p>\n

The 94th Murgon show attracted a good crowd on the main day, Saturday, keen to see the traditional attractions in the ring as well some new and quirky ones, including “Epic Darren” whose “death-defying” (or not) mini-motorcycle stunts amused the onlookers, both young and old.<\/p>\n

In the pavilion, the “garden in a cake tin” competition attracted interest, as did the “Wearable Art” fashion parade organised by Marg and Kay Enkelmann, from Silverleaf. All the creations were made from farm bits and pieces, including fertiliser bags, cow tail hair, dog food tins, wiper blades, tractor tyres and shell casings.<\/p>\n

Younger showgoers enjoyed two music and dance performances by Kangagang.<\/p>\n

A display by the Burnett Bird Keepers Association added even more atmosphere at the rear of the pavilion, with plenty of happy chirruping from budgies and ringnecks.<\/p>\n

The Queensland Rural, Regional and Remote Women’s Network had a display of photography featuring “Women of the Burnett”.<\/p>\n

The Murgon Show kicked off on Friday with Pavilion judging – needlework, culinary and photography – in the morning followed by the Young Judges and Young Handlers competitions in the evening.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Popular South Burnett singer Rowan Edwards then provided live entertainment into the night at Cattlemen’s Bar.<\/p>\n

There was an early start on Saturday for the dog show and the poultry competition, which had a record number of entries.<\/p>\n

The Grand Parade made a welcome return for 2017, complete with hot rods, dairy cattle, a horse and buggy and a German wagon restored by the volunteers at the Murgon Men’s Shed.<\/p>\n

The show was officially opened by 2016 Queensland Rural Ambassador Justin Matthews, following the “blessing of the plough” – a Murgon Show tradition which was performed this year by Senior Pastor Greg Carle from the Murgon District Baptist Church.<\/p>\n

Pastor Carle prayed that Murgon “be showered in rain soon” – a sentiment few people in the grandstand would have disagreed with, despite it being show day.<\/p>\n

Member for Callide Jeff Seeney, who was attending his last Murgon Show as the local MP, then presented Nathan Limpus with a pin for being named the 2017 Murgon Rural Ambassador.<\/p>\n

And South Burnett Deputy Mayor Kathy Duff sashed Murgon Miss Showgirl Madeline Rockemer, from Booubyjan, and runner-up Abby Jenkinson, from Murgon.<\/p>\n
