{"id":168768,"date":"2017-02-01T22:44:45","date_gmt":"2017-02-01T12:44:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=168768"},"modified":"2020-09-23T22:26:03","modified_gmt":"2020-09-23T12:26:03","slug":"csiro-finds-new-use-for-soybeans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2017\/02\/01\/csiro-finds-new-use-for-soybeans\/","title":{"rendered":"CSIRO Finds New Use For Soybeans"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_168769\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-168769\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20170201graphene.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-168769\" title=\"20170201 Graphene\" src=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20170201graphene.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"740\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20170201graphene.jpg 620w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20170201graphene-300x186.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-168769\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">CSIRO Scientist Dr Dong Han Seo, co-author of the study, holds a piece of graphene film, the world&#8217;s strongest material, produced from soybean oil (Photo: CSIRO)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>February 1, 2017<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A breakthrough by CSIRO-led scientists has made the world&#8217;s strongest material more commercially viable, thanks to the humble soybean.<\/p>\n<p>Graphene is a carbon material that is one atom thick.<\/p>\n<p>Its thinness and high conductivity means it is used in applications ranging from miniaturised electronics to biomedical devices.<\/p>\n<p>These properties also enable thinner wire connections, providing extensive benefits for computers, solar panels, batteries, sensors and other devices.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Until now, the high cost of graphene production has been the major roadblock to its commercialisation.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Previously, graphene was grown in a highly-controlled environment with explosive compressed gases, requiring long hours of operation at high temperatures and extensive vacuum processing.<\/p>\n<p>Now CSIRO scientists have developed a novel &#8220;GraphAir&#8221; technology which eliminates the need for such a highly-controlled environment.<\/p>\n<p>The technology grows graphene film in ambient air with a natural precursor, making its production quicker and easier.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This ambient-air process for graphene fabrication is fast, simple, safe, potentially scalable, and integration-friendly,&#8221; CSIRO scientist Dr Zhao Jun Han said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our unique technology is expected to reduce the cost of graphene production and improve the uptake in new applications.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>GraphAir transforms soybean oil &#8211; a renewable, natural material &#8211; into graphene films in a single step.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our GraphAir technology results in good and transformable graphene properties, comparable to graphene made by conventional methods,&#8221; Dr Dong Han Seo said.<\/p>\n<p>With heat, soybean oil breaks down into a range of carbon building units that are essential for the synthesis of graphene.<\/p>\n<p>The team also transformed other types of renewable and even waste oil, such as those left over from barbecues or cooking, into graphene films.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We can now recycle waste oils that would have otherwise been discarded and transform them into something useful,&#8221; Dr Seo said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The potential applications of graphene include water filtration and purification, renewable energy, sensors, personalised healthcare and medicine, to name a few.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Graphene has excellent electronic, mechanical, thermal and optical properties as well.<\/p>\n<p>The CSIRO are also looking to partner with industry to find new uses for graphene.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Han and Dr Seo co-authored a paper published in Nature Communications which announced their discovery.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers from The University of Sydney, the University of Technology Sydney and the Queensland University of Technology also contributed to the work.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A breakthrough by CSIRO-led scientists has made the world&#8217;s strongest material more commercially viable, thanks to the humble soybean.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":168769,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[3,36],"tags":[1134],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v19.11 -
