Smokers visiting Queensland’s national parks will face a new range of restrictions from Wednesday (February 1).<\/p>\n

They will have to move at least 10 metres away from most visitor facilities before lighting up or risk a $243 fine.<\/p>\n

The new restrictions also apply to picnic tables and barbecues, toilet blocks, jetties and information shelters, as well as occupied camp sites.<\/p>\n

National Parks Minister Dr Steven Miles said the rules were designed to protect the health of \u00a0park visitors.<\/p>\n

“We want to support people who want to stop smoking, and protect those who choose not to smoke.<\/p>\n

“While the focus will be on educating visitors about the new rules, rangers do have the power to issue on-the-spot fines of $243.”<\/p>\n

The restrictions will apply to parts of 272 national parks in Queensland, including 245 formalised campgrounds and 150 day-use areas, and bush camping sites.<\/p>\n

“New no-smoking signage is being installed, with signs striking a balance between informing people and avoiding visual pollution of these natural areas,” Dr Miles said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
