The second annual International Women’s Day Breakfast will be held at Cassis Restaurant in Booie on Wednesday, March 8 … but you’ll need to be quick if you plan to attend.<\/p>\n

The breakfast is being organised by South Burnett Women, and organisers say that with ticket sales moving quickly they expect the event is likely to fill well before the February 20 closing date.<\/p>\n

The inaugural breakfast in 2016 was used to launch the Dr Ellen Mary Kent Hughes Memorial Scholarship.<\/p>\n

Dr Kent Hughes was Queensland\u2019s first female councillor when she was elected to the former Kingaroy Shire Council in 1923.<\/p>\n

The scholarship supports a local woman embarking on tertiary education with a $5000 grant, and the committee will announce the recipient of the first scholarship at the IWD breakfast.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s guest speaker will be Member for Nanango and Deputy Opposition Leader Deb Frecklington, who is also one of the key sponsors of the scholarship and the breakfast.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Other sponsors also contributing to the event include SBcare, Swickers and Sun Pork Fresh Food, though the committee welcomes further expressions of interest from the business community.<\/p>\n

Deb Frecklington said she is highly supportive of South Burnett Women’s aims.<\/p>\n

“South Burnett Women are a terrific organisation truly dedicated to supporting women in our region, and encouraging our young women to become the best they can be,” Mrs Frecklington said.<\/p>\n

“As a working woman from country Queensland, I know how important it is to have people who support and encourage you along the way. So I’m really looking forward to the Breakfast and finding out the winner of the first Scholarship.”<\/p>\n

South Burnett Women have also been successful in obtaining a Queensland Women\u2019s Week grant.<\/p>\n

The grant, auspiced by Red Earth Foundation, will benefit female students in year 10 through their participation in the Enlighten Education South Burnett Road Show 2017.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This program works with the young women to develop self-reliance and resilience and to build self-confidence.<\/p>\n

Support for Enlighten in the South Burnett has also come from South Burnett Crs Roz Frohloff, Danita Potter, Kathy Duff and Ros Heit, the Lions Club Kingaroy and Stanwell Corporation.<\/p>\n

Enlighten will roll out across the South Burnett in March 2017, and applications for The Dr Ellen Mary Kent Hughes Memorial Scholarship will open mid-2017.<\/p>\n
