Former Year 12 St Mary’s Catholic College student Hannah Mallett went to Harvey Norman computers in Kingaroy on Thursday to pick up a new computer … and it was on the house.<\/p>\n

The cost was paid by the Kingaroy Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and KCCI president Rob Fitz-Herbert was in store to write the cheque.<\/p>\n

Hannah was one of two local high school students – one from St Mary’s, the other from Kingaroy State High – who won a $1000 bursary at last year’s school graduation ceremonies.<\/p>\n

Rob said it was a great pleasure for the KCCI to provide bursaries for the town’s two high schools each year.<\/p>\n

The bursaries are given to Year 12 students undertaking business, economics, legal or community services studies.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Winning applicants also need to display good character qualities and a strong work ethic.<\/p>\n

“The intent of the bursaries is to inspire students to pursue a goal they may feel they can’t reach because of financial limitations, even though they have the willingness, interest and capacity to do so,” Rob said.<\/p>\n

“We hope that this will help them get the head start they need as they transition into further study or employment.<\/p>\n

“A second benefit is that we encourage the winners to spend their bursary locally, wherever possible, to help spread the benefit even further into the local community.”<\/p>\n

Hannah, who was presented with her new Acer Aspire system by Harvey Norman Computers franchisee Steve Johnstone, said she plans to start looking for a job soon.<\/p>\n

But she may consider further studies in future.<\/p>\n

And – either way – the new computer will help her pursue both possibilities.<\/p>\n
