The recent hot weather has been putting a heavy load on Ergon Energy’s electricity network … and there’s more to come.<\/p>\n

People switching on air conditioners helped to push Ergon’s network load to a peak of 2046.9MW on Friday – more than the total output of Tarong and Tarong North power stations.<\/p>\n

The demand has prompted Ergon to urge customers to think about how to be energy efficient as they keep cool.<\/p>\n

Energy Queensland Chief Operating Officer Roslyn Baker said there was a strong chance that demand in the days ahead could challenge Friday’s near-record.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cErgon\u2019s customers will want to stay cool and comfortable during the heatwave that\u2019s forecast and we know this will increase demand across our network,\u201d Ms Baker said.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut there are some really simple steps they can take to keep their homes cool and be energy efficient.<\/p>\n

\u201cClean the filters in your air-conditioner or have them serviced professionally, close windows and curtains and internal doors to help insulate living areas and set air-conditioners to 25 degrees.<\/p>\n

\u201cMake sure your air-conditioner is set to recirculate so you\u2019re not drawing in much warmer air from the outside and using a lot of electricity to cool it down.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cUsing ceiling or pedestal fans will help distribute cool air to where it\u2019s needed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ms Baker said people should also look at what appliances might be generating heat in their home and minimise their use at the hottest times of the day.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll electrical appliances generate heat so using ovens and stovetops, computers, televisions, printers and even lighting that isn\u2019t energy efficient will add to the heating load so think about which of these you can do without,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey are simple solutions but they work and can keep homes cool in a more efficient way.\u201d<\/p>\n
