{"id":166745,"date":"2016-12-21T16:50:44","date_gmt":"2016-12-21T06:50:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=166745"},"modified":"2020-09-29T13:31:12","modified_gmt":"2020-09-29T03:31:12","slug":"dont-snub-queensland-prawns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2016\/12\/21\/dont-snub-queensland-prawns\/","title":{"rendered":"Don&#8217;t Snub Queensland Prawns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><figure id=\"attachment_278794\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-278794\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/michael-crandon-200x350.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"350\" class=\"size-full wp-image-278794\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/michael-crandon-200x350.jpg 200w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/michael-crandon-200x350-171x300.jpg 171w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-278794\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Member for Coomera Michael Crandon<\/figcaption><\/figure><strong>December 21, 2016<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Prawns will be on the menus of many families over the next few weeks, but people have been urged to only buy Queensland prawns.<\/p>\n<p>The industry has been hit by the current outbreak of white spot disease in the Logan River &#8211; which has been quarantined &#8211; but there are still plenty of wild-caught and farmed Queensland prawns available.<\/p>\n<p>LNP Member for Coomera Michael Crandon said Queenslanders need to be support local fishermen, local farmers and their families.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Despite the white spot outbreak in the Logan River, east coast trawler operators have recorded one of their best prawn catches in years,&#8221; Mr Crandon said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThe last thing our local industry needs is for consumers to assume there\u2019s going to be a shortage of prawns due to white spot disease.<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\n\u201cGovernment and industry needs to work through this outbreak and ensure it doesn\u2019t happen again.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While white spot poses no risk to humans, it can devastate production.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Crandon has also called for the current review to be given every resource necessary so the source of the outbreak could hopefully be identified.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Given that Federal Agriculture Department reports show 73 consignments of imported green prawns have tested positive to white spot since May this year, there needs to be assurance that imports are not infected,\u201d he said.<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\n\u201cThe easiest way to ensure that is to make sure all imported prawns are cooked prior to arrival in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m standing up for my local prawn farmers and trawler operators who\u2019ve invested in their businesses and are now shut down due to white spot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone\u2019s waiting for the review process to be completed, but at the end of it we need to have a very hard look at our import protocols and ask the obvious question, if so many consignments are testing positive why are we allowing them in uncooked?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny widespread outbreak of white spot will have a major impact on our aquaculture industry as well as trade implications and environmental and social impacts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to take heed of what the disease has done to farmed prawn production overseas. In the 1990s white spot decimated production in China, Japan, Thailand, and the United States.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The outbreak on the Logan River also highlighted the need for a national industry agreement to provide an assistance\/compensation package.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cIt is unfair that the full weight of responsibility has been foisted onto the shoulders of three Logan River farmers at a cost to them of several million dollars.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nMr Crandon said green prawns could be imported into Australia but they must be cooked before they were sold.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The requirement to cook before they enter the country will have no impact on volume of prawns coming into Australia because they must be cooked before sale anyway,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Prawns can only be imported into Australia for the purpose of human consumption, not for bait.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Prawns will be on the menus of many families over the next few weeks, but people have been urged to only buy Queensland prawns.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":20,"featured_media":278795,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[3,36],"tags":[1134],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v19.11 -
