Changes Are Good
News For Farmers<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Town Planning Scheme changes announced by the State Government will be good news for South Burnett farmers who want to expand their operations.<\/p>\n

In August, the SBRC was critical of the previous town planning system, which councillors said was “strangling” farm expansions.<\/p>\n

The SBRC was debating the expansion of a piggery at Abbeywood.<\/p>\n

The proposed expansion was reduced from seven sheds to one shed by the piggery owner because of the high costs of red tape the proposal faced.<\/p>\n

SBRC Mayor Wayne Kratzmann said at the time that “a lot of this red tape flies in the face of common sense” and Cr Cheryl Dalton said she felt current State legislation was actively blocking substantial expansion in the region.<\/p>\n

Today the Mayor welcomed the changes, which he said will help reduce costs significantly.\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

The State Government has further simplified guidelines for making and amending planning schemes following council and industry feedback.<\/p>\n

Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning Jeff Seeney said the changes would cut red tape and empower local governments.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis reform is part of this government\u2019s overhaul of the planning system,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe new ‘Statutory Guideline 02\/12 Making and Amending Local Planning Instruments’ sets out a clear process for councils to follow when seeking to make or amend planning schemes and local planning instruments.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt spells out both the local and State government\u2019s obligations and timeframes for their fulfilment.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe revised process empowers local governments to make decisions, and reduces intervention by the State Government in local planning matters.\u201d<\/p>\n

The new statutory guideline replace the original ‘Statutory Guideline Version 01\/12’ released in January, 2012.<\/p>\n

Assistant Minister for Planning Reform Ian Walker ordered a review of the previous guideline following feedback received at a series of planning reform forums held between May and July.<\/p>\n

\u201cFollowing my meetings with key bodies, it became clear the process could be improved and the guidelines made more useful and relevant to local government and other users,\u201d Mr Walker said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe latest changes mean councils can have more control and ownership of their own planning schemes, and be more responsive to the changing needs of their community.\u201d<\/p>\n
