A nervous week-long wait by Murgon’s Christmas Fair organising committee was rewarded with near-perfect weather conditions on Friday night, much to everyone’s relief.<\/p>\n

While parts of the region received overnight and early morning rain, the weather bureau’s forecast of heavier rain steadily evaporated as the day progressed.<\/p>\n

By the time this year’s Christmas Fair got underway at 5:00pm, the weather was pleasantly mild and – most importantly, after last year’s wash-out – quite dry.<\/p>\n

Murgonites responded with a turnout that did the town proud.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Long queues lined up at the ticket booths to purchase rides on the giant amusement machines that packed the lower end of Lamb Street, and food sellers had a busy time keeping pace with orders from hungry patrons.<\/p>\n

Murgon Lions kept young children amused with their merry-go-round while Murgon Rotary kept their parents entertained with a ham wheel offering a dazzling assortment of prizes.<\/p>\n

Many CBD traders opened their doors so patrons could enjoy night-time Christmas shopping, and entertainers at the rotunda helped keep the mood upbeat and festive all night.<\/p>\n

Many smaller patrons, of course, had come to see Santa Claus to pass on their Christmas gift wishes.<\/p>\n

The jolly gentleman didn’t disappoint, arriving at the Fair in a brightly decorated sleigh drawn by a tractor sporting reindeer horns not long after activities got underway.<\/p>\n

Once he’d waved to the crowd and wished everyone a Merry Christmas, he quickly took his chair underneath a giant Christmas tree to minister to queues of young ones brought along by their parents, and posing happily for photos.<\/p>\n

Murgon Business and Development Association president Leo Geraghty said he was very pleased with the turnout, and congratulated the Fair’s organisers and sponsors for helping make the popular festival’s 23rd outing a great night out.<\/strong><\/p>\n

His view was echoed by Queensland Dairy Industry Museum chairman Ritchie O’Neill, who’d helped judge Murgon’s entries in this year’s Christmas Lights competition.<\/p>\n

Ritchie said he was very impressed with the standard of displays this year.<\/p>\n

Most entries were very good and some were quite exceptional, he said.<\/p>\n

But they had all helped add to the festive atmosphere of the town, and he thought that probably played a part in the Lamb Street festivities too.<\/p>\n
