The State Government has unveiled a new recreation area at Wivenhoe Dam, just in time for the summer holidays.<\/p>\n

Billies Bay and Hays Landing, on the eastern side of Lake Wivenhoe, have been turned into a picnic and barbecue area with opportunities for swimming, fishing, paddling and sailing.<\/p>\n

The area – which will be officially opened on December 10 – was previously off limits to the public.<\/p>\n

\u201cAccess to the site, which is effectively on an island located in the middle of Wivenhoe Dam, has been upgraded with a new bridge and resurfaced road,” Water Supply Minister Mark Bailey said.<\/p>\n

“Billies Bay and Hays Landing will collectively boast a double lane boat ramp as well as swimming and picnic facilities.\u201d<\/p>\n

Somerset Regional Council Mayor Graeme Lehmann said the new site would provide an economic boost to the Somerset region through increased tourism.<\/p>\n
