The group calling for the restoration of the wooden Jimna Fire Tower say “people power” is now the key to its preservation.<\/p>\n

“People power can now save the Heritage-listed Jimna Fire Tower,” Jimna Forest Action Group Inc secretary Dave Wright said.<\/p>\n

He said the State Government was calling for letters of support for the future of the 47m tall tower.<\/p>\n

The Jimna Fire Tower was built in 1977 and is claimed by supporters to be the tallest man-made wooden fire tower of its type in the southern hemisphere.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It formerly offered 360 degree views over the surrounding forestry areas.<\/p>\n

It was closed to tourists in 2006 because of its condition. Earlier this year, Member for Nanango Deb Frecklington said it would cost more than $1 million to fix.<\/p>\n

But supporters say the tower formerly attracted more than 30,000 tourists a year.<\/p>\n

“This Australian icon now needs the general public to put their hand up,” Mr Wright said.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“It will be the last throw of the dice for this unique part of Australian history and heritage.<\/p>\n
