{"id":16278,"date":"2012-11-15T12:24:16","date_gmt":"2012-11-15T02:24:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=16278"},"modified":"2024-03-07T13:58:25","modified_gmt":"2024-03-07T03:58:25","slug":"mandatory-5500-fines-imposed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2012\/11\/15\/mandatory-5500-fines-imposed\/","title":{"rendered":"Mandatory $5500 Fines Imposed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><figure id=\"attachment_16350\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16350\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/jack-dempsey-250.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/jack-dempsey-250.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Jack Dempsey\" width=\"250\" height=\"350\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/jack-dempsey-250.jpg 250w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/jack-dempsey-250-214x300.jpg 214w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16350\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Police Minister Jack Dempsey inspecting Kingaroy Police Station last week with Deb Frecklington and Snr Sgt Duane Frank<\/figcaption><\/figure><strong>November 14, 2012<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Police Minister Jack Dempsey has described the recent convictions of two men under tough new LNP evade police laws as a strong message for people who try to escape the law.<\/p>\n<p>In August, the Newman Government increased penalties for motorists attempting to outrun police to a mandatory $5500 fine and two-year loss of license.<\/p>\n<p>One motorist in Hervey Bay and another in Caboolture have paid the price for their decision to run and were convicted by the courts last week.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Dempsey said the convictions were a win for the community and police whose lives are put at risk by dangerous drivers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor too long the community has been frustrated by the number of people who don\u2019t stop when directed to by police thereby placing lives in danger,\u201d Mr Dempsey said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the first six months of this year alone more than 1500 motorists evaded police because, under Labor\u2019s penalties, they knew they\u2019d only get a fine of around $300. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is the same amount a mum or dad would get for a standard traffic offence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe LNP identified that evading police was becoming an increasing problem in Queensland and we hope these convictions and subsequent penalties send a strong message to people flirting with the notion of doing a runner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Dempsey said the government would continue to crack down on people who think it is okay to put innocent lives at risk with dangerous driving.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy the end of the year we\u2019ll see the recently announced anti-hooning laws brought before Parliament which will introduce a two-strikes penalty for serious offenders,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnder the proposed laws, hoons will have their car taken off the road for three months after their first offence and forfeit their vehicle if caught again within a five-year period.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Police Minister Jack Dempsey has described recent convictions of two men under tough new LNP evade police laws as a strong message for people who try to escape the law.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":20,"featured_media":16351,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[3,24],"tags":[1132],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v19.11 -
