Sunday’s cold, windy weather may have made for less than ideal flying conditions … but that didn’t deter the Kingaroy Aero Modellers Society (KAMS) from staging their annual Open Day at the club’s Booie airfield.<\/p>\n

The Open Day was a charity fundraiser for the Royal Flying Doctor Service as well as a way to introduce potential new members to the sport, and was officially opened by Cr Danita Potter and Cr Roz Frohloff.<\/p>\n

KAMS was formed in 1983 and has been flying at its current site for over 20 years, thanks to the support of the club’s landlords Bill, Mary, Stewart and Peter McLennan.<\/p>\n

The club upgraded their facilities in 2014 after making a successful grant application to the Gambling Community Benefit Fund, which was assisted by Member for Nanango Deb Frecklington.<\/p>\n

And during the last twelve months they have made a number of other significant improvements to the airfield’s facilities, KAMS president John Box said.<\/p>\n

At the day’s official opening ceremony, John paid tribute to the club’s major sponsors – Darryl Hansen from the Kingaroy Stihl Shop, Clint Andrewartha from Hotondo Homes, Denis and Sheryl Hansen from Denis\u2019s Caravan Repairs and Leister Janetski from Protec Lighting and Sound.<\/p>\n

He also encouraged everyone to grab a warming cuppa and some biscuits in exchange for a $2 donation to the Royal Flying Doctor Service.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sausage sandwiches and cold drinks were also available at the canteen, John said, but the proceeds of those sales would go to KAMS.<\/p>\n

After the formalities were done, guests examined the many different types of model aeroplanes that members had brought along, or watched as they took to the skies and performed swoops, banks and turns in defiance of the blustery conditions.<\/p>\n

The day eventually wound down at 3:00pm when the weather began to turn freezing, but the club still judged the event a success.<\/p>\n

In all, $114 was raised for the Flying Doctors and several potential new members have expressed an interest in attending future club flying days, which are held every Sunday morning when the weather is fine.<\/p>\n
