Where do you turn to if you need an answer? These days it’s usually the Internet … and quite often it’s Facebook.<\/p>\n

This is the reason why Charters Towers farmer Kylie Streeton and a few friends founded “Ask An Aussie Farmer<\/a><\/strong>” on Facebook to allow people – in the city and the country – to ask questions about how their food is produced from the people that work on the land.<\/p>\n

Kylie visited Kingaroy State School last week as part of the school’s Art4Agriculture “Archibull” prize from the Brisbane Ekka.<\/p>\n

She fielded many questions from the young students.<\/p>\n

“Kylie travelled all the way from Charters Towers to show students life in a remote part of central Queensland,” Year 2 teacher Glenis Miller said.<\/p>\n

“An informative slide show inspired a wave of clarifying questions from the curious students as they attempted to grasp the concept of situations such as, ‘your classmate lives a three hour drive away’, ‘your mum is also the nurse and will perform a stitching procedure on an injury if necessary’ and, ‘the postman is also the pilot who will deliver other goods to your place by plane’.”<\/p>\n

Kylie is one of Art4Agriculture’s Young Farming Champions for 2012.<\/p>\n

“We thank the RNA for hosting and organising the Archibull competition, Meat Livestock Australia and appreciate the time and effort of our Young Farming Champion for visiting Kingaroy State Primary school students,” Mrs Miller said.<\/p>\n

Below is some of the feedback from students who attended the information session:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Thank you for inspiring my class and myself. I didn\u2019t know that your chooks are vicious with toads and snakes. I really liked to see the pictures of the triple tri-axle trucks that were transporting cattle. Do you take extra petrol with you when you are mustering with the motor bikes? In the pictures it looked like you were so far away from any sheds or houses to refuel. How do you do that?

We learnt that you have to be a doctor and vet and everything when you are a farmer because you are so far away from any town.

I liked it when you showed us the scraper at the dam building because I love scrapers.

We learnt that being a farmer is hard work.

We learnt that the pilot was your postman and the postman in our town rides on a motor bike.
