An artist who creates portraits of famous people using thousands of postage stamps will be the centrepiece of the Wondai Art Gallery’s September exhibition.<\/p>\n

Marlies Oakley’s collection of 22 portraits range from Queen Elizabeth to Andy Warhol, and Nick Cave to well-known cartoon character Marge Simpson.<\/p>\n

Each picture is produced using repetitive blocks of stamps to form a stylised image of a well-known public figure.<\/p>\n

All the works are put together using thousands of stamps, each one individually hand cut to shape – a gruelling and painstaking process that takes many, many hours of work.<\/p>\n

Marlies Oakley’s unusual portraits will be displayed in the Main Gallery, and they will be complemented by three other exhibitions.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the Front Gallery, the Tangled Threads group will be displaying “Tangled Threads 16”, an exhibition of original textile designs.<\/p>\n

All members of the group have attended workshops – locally, interstate and overseas – with highly credentialed textile art tutors, and they have incorporated a wide range of contemporary textile art techniques into their latest show.<\/p>\n

The works have been created using a variety of methods including fabric dyeing, felting, fabric painting, stitching, printing and beading.<\/p>\n

And in the Third Gallery, The Soup Kitchen will be displaying “Pot Luck”, an assortment of works created by newly emerging artists and established artists in this South Burnett art group, which meets on Saturdays.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, children from Taabinga State School will be displaying their own works in Kidz Korner.<\/p>\n

All four exhibitions will have their official opening at 6:00pm this Friday night (September 2), accompanied by wine tastings from Crane’s Winery, live music, finger foods and punch.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Admission to the opening night is $5.<\/p>\n

After Friday night’s opening, the exhibitions will remain on display at the Gallery from 10:00am to 4:00pm daily until the end of the month, and admission to view them is free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
