{"id":15580,"date":"2012-11-07T21:36:49","date_gmt":"2012-11-07T11:36:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=15580"},"modified":"2021-01-22T15:45:27","modified_gmt":"2021-01-22T05:45:27","slug":"why-missing-school-matters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2012\/11\/07\/why-missing-school-matters\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Missing School Matters"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_15581\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15581\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/20121107naplan.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-15581\" title=\"20121107 Cherbourg State School\" src=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/20121107naplan.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"740\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/20121107naplan.jpg 620w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/20121107naplan-300x186.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15581\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cherbourg State School students Rondine Speedy, Frankhia Bond and Izayha Kelly-West are doing well due to the work of Barambah PaCE community mentor Shantelle Arnold and<br \/>Year 3 teacher Peter Bakhash<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>November 7, 2012<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>by Marcus Priaulx<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Going to school every day really does count &#8230; and NAPLAN results prove it.<\/p>\n<p>Cherbourg State School has just had expert analysis done of its national assessment results and the outcome linked students\u2019 achievement to their attendance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt definitely shows kids with the best attendance get the best results,\u201d Cherbourg State School principal Peter Sansby said.<\/p>\n<p>While the school has children classed as gifted and talented it also has youngsters reaching the minimum national standard or close to it, despite coming to class only 50 per cent of the time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis won\u2019t be maintained unless their parents make more of an effort to ensure their children come to school every day, on time,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe work will get harder as they get older and the children will fall behind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese students have huge potential and we want their parents to realise they could reach the top of any career they choose to do, if they just put in the effort to get their kids to school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s nothing worse than a potential doctor, teacher, mechanic, builder \u2026 going to waste.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>School is for only 190 of 365 days a year and Mr Sansby said parents needed to realise they were doing their children no favours by allowing them to stay at home.<\/p>\n<p>He said moments of conflict or tears that may ensue by making children go to school would seem worth it as they grew to be happy, confident teenagers and adults.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCaving in to tantrums could alternatively set them up for a hard life of struggle,\u201d Mr Sansby said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSchool is a must.\u00a0We want our children to be able to compete in a global and high-tech economy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no doubt they can do it if they come to school every day, on time. \u00a0It\u2019s that easy.\u00a0They have the talent, they just need to realise it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>* * *<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Does your child have the best chance of being successful?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If your child misses 10 minutes of school every day, this is equivalent to staying at home for six months by the time he\/she graduates.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>20 minutes = 1 year<\/li>\n<li>30 minutes = 18 months<\/li>\n<li>1 hour = 2.5 years<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>\n<p><strong>If your child misses:<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>One day a fortnight = half of a Year 11 level of education by the time they hit Year 12<\/li>\n<li>One day a week = About a Year 9 education by the time they hit Year 12<\/li>\n<li>Two days per week = a Year 7 education by the time they&#8217;re in Year 12.<\/li>\n<li>Three days per week = a Year 4 education at the age of 17 \/ 18.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Going to school every day really does count &#8230; and NAPLAN results prove it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":15581,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[3],"tags":[1135,35],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v19.11 -
