Mobile phones are only one of the distractions that cause crashes<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Queensland Police are marking Road Safety Week with a daily campaign highlighting key causes of motor vehicle crashes.<\/p>\n

Officer-in-charge of Kingaroy Police, Senior Sergeant Duane Frank, said Monday’s topic was “Distractions”.<\/p>\n

“People need to concentrate on their driving so that they drive safely each and every time,” Snr Sgt Frank said.<\/p>\n

“If they are not paying attention to what is happening on the road in front of them, they are much more likely to be involved in an incident.”<\/p>\n

Common distractions include mobile phone use – including texting – which is illegal and attracts stiff penalties.<\/p>\n

Drivers should also be aware of other common distractions:<\/strong><\/p>\n

  • Passengers and children in vehicles<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
      \n
    • Adjusting the stereo or radio<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
        \n
      • Eating and drinking while driving<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
          \n
        • Using a sat nav<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          “Distracted drivers can be charged with failing to have proper control of a vehicle, or driving without due care and attention,” Snr Sgt Frank said.<\/p>\n

          “Distracted drivers can run into vehicles in front of them, or go straight through road signs or red lights without stopping.<\/p>\n

          “Being distracted also increases a driver’s reaction time.”<\/p>\n
