Kingaroy State High School walked away the winners of this year’s South Burnett High School Art Competition when the results were announced on Friday night.<\/p>\n

For the first time since the competition began, the Wondai Regional Art Gallery attracted entries from all four South Burnett senior high schools.<\/p>\n

In honour of the occasion, the Gallery introduced a new Perpetual Trophy for the event which was awarded to the high school whose students did best overall.<\/p>\n

Kingaroy State High School students pocketed three high commendations and took out nine of the major prizes on the night to become the first holders of the trophy.<\/p>\n

Gallery curator Elaine Madill told the capacity crowd the main aim of the competition was to stimulate the next generation of the South Burnett’s arts community.<\/p>\n

“You are the people who will take over our galleries and produce our art when we are gone,” Elaine told the students who had come to the opening night.<\/p>\n

“Without you we are nothing. You are the future of art in our region.”<\/p>\n

She paid tribute to all the region’s high school art teachers and to all the students in attendance for the high quality of their work.<\/p>\n

Elaine also paid special tribute to Gallery patron Brian Tucker, who provided $1500 in prize monies for this year’s competition winners.<\/p>\n

Brian has been a long-time supporter of the Gallery and was amongst the first to volunteer when Elaine announced she was starting fund-raising for this year’s event.<\/p>\n

Elaine also thanked Gayndah art teacher Sue Capell, who \u00a0judged this year’s entries, and Cr Ros Heit, who announces the winners and handed out the prizes.<\/p>\n
